Domestic Solar Battery Storage
Solar photovoltaic panels, commonly called solar PV panels, capture energy from daylight and convert it into electricity that can be used throughout your property.
Solar panels generate direct current (DC) electricity when daylight reaches the photovoltaic cells. An inverter then converts this into alternating current (AC) electricity, which can be used by your lights, appliances, equipment and other electrical systems.
In short, no. Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, so they continue working during cloudy and overcast conditions. However, they will normally produce more electricity on bright, sunny days.
Yes, solar panels generate electricity throughout the year, including during winter. Output is normally lower during the winter because the days are shorter and there are fewer hours of strong daylight.
No, solar panels require daylight to generate electricity. At night, your property will use electricity from the National Grid or from a solar battery if you have stored surplus energy during the day.
Most properties can accommodate some form of solar PV system. Suitability depends on the available roof space, roof orientation, roof condition, shading, electricity usage and the capacity of the local electricity network.A site survey will determine the most suitable system for your property.
A south-facing roof will usually generate the highest overall amount of electricity. However, east- and west-facing roofs can still produce strong results.East-facing panels generate more electricity during the morning, while west-facing panels generate more during the afternoon and early evening. This can sometimes match a household's electricity usage particularly well.
It may be technically possible, but north-facing roofs generally receive less direct sunlight and are therefore less productive. We will assess whether the expected generation would make the installation worthwhile during a site visit.
Shade from trees, chimneys, neighbouring properties or roof features can reduce solar generation. During your survey, we assess potential shading and design the panel layout to minimise its effect.Where some shading cannot be avoided, power optimisers or microinverters may help individual panels operate more independently.
Yes. Your roof must be structurally suitable and capable of supporting the solar panel mounting system. If your roof is approaching the end of its life, it may be better to complete repairs or replacement work before installing the panels. This avoids the cost of removing and reinstalling them later.
Yes. Solar panels can be fitted to many flat roofs using an angled mounting system. The layout must account for wind loading, shading between rows, drainage, available space and the strength of the roof structure.
Potentially, provided the structure is suitable and there is a safe route for the electrical cabling. We can assess the building, its orientation and its connection to your main electrical system.
Yes. In-roof solar panels can be fitted in place of sections of roof covering rather than sitting above the tiles. This can create a streamlined appearance and is particularly suitable for new roofs, extensions and major roof renovations.
The correct number depends on:Your annual electricity consumptionThe available roof spaceRoof orientation and shadingThe output rating of the chosen panelsYour daytime electricity usageWhether you have a battery, electric vehicle or heat pumpYour available budget
We design the system around your property and energy requirements rather than simply installing the maximum number of panels available.
Kilowatt peak, or kWp, is the maximum rated output of a solar panel system under standard test conditions. For example, ten 450-watt panels would have a combined panel capacity of approximately 4.5kWp. Actual generation will vary depending on location, orientation, shading, weather and system design.
Your quotation should include an estimated annual generation figure based on your location, roof direction, roof angle, shading and proposed system size. This is an estimate rather than a guarantee because annual weather conditions and household usage patterns vary.
Most modern inverters provide an online portal or mobile application. This allows you to view current generation, historical performance, electricity consumption and battery status where applicable.Monitoring helps you understand when solar electricity is available and identify any unexpected reduction in performance.
The cost depends on the number and type of panels, inverter specification, roof access, scaffolding requirements, mounting system, electrical work and whether battery storage is included.Following a survey, you should receive a detailed quotation explaining what is included and the estimated performance of the proposed system.
Savings depend on:How much electricity the system generatesHow much solar electricity you use directlyYour electricity tariffYour daytime energy consumptionWhether you install battery storageThe export tariff you receiveFuture electricity pricesUsing more of your solar electricity within the property will normally provide a greater financial benefit than exporting it. The Energy Saving Trust provides a calculator for personalised estimates based on your home, location and energy use.
There is no single payback period that applies to every property. It depends on the installation cost, system performance, electricity prices, export income and how much generated electricity you use yourself. We provide estimated generation and savings information to help you make an informed decision, but future electricity prices and personal usage cannot be guaranteed.
Try to use electricity while your panels are generating. This could include running washing machines, dishwashers, immersion heaters, business equipment or electric vehicle chargers during daylight hours.Battery storage and smart energy controls can also help you use a greater proportion of the electricity you generate.
Yes. Eligible solar generators can receive payments for electricity exported to the grid through a Smart Export Guarantee tariff offered by energy suppliers.Export rates and contract terms vary between energy suppliers, so it is worth comparing available tariffs. Your export supplier does not necessarily have to be the same company that supplies your electricity.
Requirements vary between suppliers, but you will usually need:An eligible solar installationAn export-capable smart meter or approved export meterDetails of the installed systemEvidence that the installation meets the required technical standardsAn MCS certificate or another form of evidence accepted by the supplierYour chosen export supplier will confirm its exact application requirements.
At the time of writing, qualifying solar panel and electrical battery installations in residential accommodation are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027. Dated: August 2026
Funding depends on your location, household circumstances, income, property and the schemes available at the time. There is not one universal grant available to every homeowner. However, some customers may qualify for local authority, energy supplier or government-backed support. Funding rules change, so eligibility should always be checked before committing to an installation.
Most domestic rooftop solar installations in England are classed as permitted development, provided they meet the relevant limits and conditions.Additional permission may be required for listed buildings, properties within certain conservation areas, installations that project significantly from the roof or some ground-mounted systems. Your local planning authority should be consulted where there is any uncertainty.
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is a UK quality scheme covering small-scale renewable energy systems and installers. An MCS certified installation demonstrates that the system has been installed in accordance with recognised standards. Certification may also be required by energy suppliers when applying for export payments.Caddick Wright is an MCS Certified Installer, you are in good hands.
A straightforward domestic solar panel installation will often take approximately one or two days once the scaffolding is in place.Larger systems, battery installations, complex roofs, electrical upgrades or poor weather may increase the installation time. This will discussed during your site visit.
Scaffolding is normally required for safe access to pitched roofs. The exact arrangement depends on the height, shape and accessibility of the property.Any scaffolding requirements will be discussed during the site visit.
Disruption is generally limited. Most work takes place externally, although access will be required to install the inverter, cabling, isolators, monitoring equipment and any battery storage. The electricity supply may need to be switched off briefly while the new system is connected and tested.
A professionally designed and installed mounting system should not damage a roof that is in suitable condition. The mounting method should be appropriate for the roof covering, weatherproofing must be carefully maintained, and the structure will be assessed before installation.
The inverter is normally installed in a garage, utility room, plant room or another suitable, accessible and ventilated location. The final position will depend on the system design, manufacturer requirements, cable routes, weather protection and safe access for future maintenance.
Solar panels themselves do not contain moving parts and make no operational noise. The inverter may produce a quiet electrical hum or cooling fan noise while operating, which is why its position should be considered carefully.
Quality solar panels should continue generating electricity for 25 years or longer, although their maximum output will gradually reduce over time.Inverters generally have a shorter operating life than the panels, and may need replacement during the lifetime of the system.
A solar installation can include separate warranties for:Solar panel materials and workmanshipSolar panel performanceThe inverterBattery storageMounting equipmentInstallation workmanshipThe exact warranty cover, exclusions and registration requirements will be detailed in your quotation and handover pack.
Solar panels have no moving parts and generally require little routine maintenance. It is sensible to monitor their performance and arrange an inspection if generation falls unexpectedly. The inverter, electrical connections, mounting system and battery should also be checked in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Rainfall helps keep most angled rooftop panels reasonably clean. However, dirt, moss, leaves, bird droppings or pollution may occasionally reduce performance.Cleaning frequency will depend on the property’s location and surrounding environment. High or difficult-to-access panels should be cleaned by a suitable professional rather than by climbing onto the roof.
Monitoring equipment may identify a drop in system performance. Caddick Wright can inspect the panels, inverter, cabling and electrical connections to locate any problems.Depending on the fault and warranty terms, the affected equipment may be repaired or replaced.
Solar panels are often covered as part of the building, but policies vary. You should tell your insurer about the installation and confirm that the panels, inverter and battery are covered. You should also check whether there are any specific requirements relating to installation certification or battery location.
An owned solar PV system will normally remain with the property. You should retain the quotation, warranties, MCS certificate, electrical certificates, monitoring details and export tariff information for the new owner.Your solicitor can advise on transferring any relevant ownership or export arrangements.
Yes. Solar-generated electricity can contribute towards charging an electric vehicle.A smart EV charger can help schedule charging when solar generation is available, although the amount supplied directly by solar will depend on the system output and the vehicle’s charging requirements.
Yes. Solar panels can provide some of the electricity used by a heat pump, helping to reduce the amount imported from the grid. The best results come from designing the solar panels, heat pump, battery and electricity tariff as one coordinated energy system.
Solar PV panels generate electricity rather than heat directly. However, surplus electricity can be directed to an immersion heater using a solar diverter, provided you have a suitable hot water cylinder.
